The Regulations relating to continuing professional development, 2019 (BN:42464)  were published for implementation on 17 May 2019 in terms of section 33(1)(o) of the Pharmacy Act, 1974 (Act No. 53 of 1974), made ;Council may from time to time, by board notice, specify which categories of persons registered in terms of section 14 of the Act, are required to record their continuing professional development activities as provided for in these Regulations.

Registered persons have an obligation to promote the provision of pharmaceutical care which complies with universal norms and values, with the goal of achieving definite therapeutic outcomes for the health and quality of life of  patients, by ensuring that the general public receive maximum therapeutic benefits from medicines, medical devices and In Vitro Diagnostic medical devices (IVD).

The universities are introducing students to Council’s CPD process for the purpose of training in order to prepare students for internship. Each university will determine at which level of study to introduce students to the CPD process. Council has also enhanced the CPD system to allow CPDs submitted by students to be allocated to the respective university assessors for assessment.

The CPD cycle comprising the following four steps must be followed when submitting CPD activities online:

Step 1: Reflection on practice (Answers the questions – what do I need to know? What do I need to be able to do?)

Step 2: Planning (Answers the question – How can I learn?)

Step 3: Implementation (Describes the action taken)

Step 4: Evaluation or reflection on learning (Answers the questions – What have I learnt? How is it benefiting my practice?)
